X Factor USA: Brooklyn’s Brian Bradley Says: Yo! Simon Stop Starin' at My Mom, Dude!

Saturday, October 01, 2011 Posted by The Home Treatment

Every audience likes to see snarky Simon Cowell getting put in his place. And who better to do it than a jumped-up teenage rapper from Brooklyn?

Brian Bradley, the rapper in question, auditioned for the X Factor judges in Newark. And what he lacked for in height, Brian more than made up for in attitude. We loved his confident declaration that he sees Jay-Z and Kanye West as his competition, and “if you give me about five more years, I’ll be better than Jay-Z”.

Brian swaggers out on stage, promising to rock the judges like a tornado, and walks straight into a sardonic question from Simon: “Why do you think you haven’t had a record deal yet?” Obviously, being 14, there’s a very good reason Brian hasn’t had a record deal yet. But he brilliantly deadpans back at the judge: “Um, I mean, it’s politics, man. You gotta know somebody that knows somebody, and if you don’t….”

Rather brilliantly, he engineers an ‘argument’ with Cowell that has the judge looking genuinely flustered. “You lucky we ain’t in the streets, coz if we was in the streets…” Even LA Reid is wary of where Brian’s stage banter is going, but the rapper tells the soundman to drop a beat and launches into his own original rap, Stop Looking At My Mom. It’s a moment of brilliant television, almost the equal of the Pants On The Floor from American Idol a couple of years ago!

The kid wins over the audience and most of the judging panel with his ferocious, funny rap. Brian’s definitely got star quality. And we’re consistently amazed that original compositions have been creeping into the auditions this year. Most reality shows veer away from them for one reason or another. As Brian walks off stage with four yeses from the judges, we hear LA Reid say he’s “the complete package, a triple threat”.
